The Quarters:
This is the original quarters of Gordon Castle. There used to be the first hydro-electric power station in the Highlands, an ice house and a salmon hatchery. Grianan was built by the Duke of Gordon for the manager of his power station. Now The Quarters is a tranquil group of fourteen houses enjoying a wonderful setting. Immediately behind Grianan is a footbridge and ford over the Fochabers Burn, the original route into The Quarters. From here, past a couple of fish ladders, a well-maintained path follows the burn through the Burn o’Fochabers Woodland for a mile through the village. Two minutes from the house you can enjoy a fine view up the Spey from the seats in the Famous Fochaberians’ garden or walk through the park and mature trees around the cricket pitch.
Fochabers:
Fochabers is a charming village on the banks of the River Spey. With a population of around 1,700 it is a thriving community supporting a remarkable range of shops and services. It has its own well-respected primary and secondary schools, three churches, two Co-ops, a post office counter, butcher, chemist, barber, hair and beauty salons, a garden centre and garage. The village benefits from three hotels, several coffee shops, and an award-winning ice cream parlour and fish & chip shop. Specialised shops cater for weddings, running, sewing, antiques and gifts. Further shops and services are located in the nearby towns of Elgin, Buckie and Keith. Grianan is just 700 metres from the square in the centre of Fochabers.
From the house, the Speyside Way can take you as far as Aviemore and Duffton or Spey Bay and Buckie. From the house, shorter walks take you up the burn, to the power station intake, or to the castle grounds with its lake and magnificent Walled Garden, one of the biggest in Britain. Mountain bike trails and woodland walks start in the village and climb into adjacent hills. Short journeys by car or bus will give you access to some of Scotland’s least visited sandy beaches and spectacular coastal scenery. Golfers are spoiled for choice with eight golf courses within ten miles. Speyside is one of the loveliest and unspoiled parts of the British Isles, not least for anglers. Whatever your interests you will find a wealth of activities in Fochabers Institute or nearby. With a delightful and productive garden, there is also so much to enjoy at home!
Local volunteers fill the High Street with flowers, maintain woodland walks, lay on the annual Speyfest traditional Music Festival, arrange the village gala, look after the heritage museum, provide a wide range of social, youth and community services and so much more.
